When you can ignore all of this
Below ±4.00 the correction is smaller than the quarter-diopter steps lenses are made in, so it rounds to nothing. A −2.50 glasses wearer orders −2.50 contacts and never thinks about vertex distance again. What colored contacts can and cannot correct
Sphere (SPH) — yes. That is the minus power in the selector, and the number this whole article is about.
Cylinder and axis (CYL / AXIS) — no. Those correct astigmatism and need toric lenses, which standard colored contacts are not. Mild astigmatism under about −0.75 CYL usually tolerates a spherical lens with slight softness; beyond that, no spherical lens will be crisp, and chasing it by bumping the sphere makes things worse. BC and DIA: the other two numbers on the vial
BC (base curve) is the curvature of the lens's back surface, typically 8.5–8.7 mm on colored lenses. That span fits most adult eyes. You only need to think about it if lenses consistently slide around or feel tight — and that is a fitting appointment, not a guessing game.
