Zombie lenses do something the rest of the Halloween catalogue does not: instead of adding a colour, they add damage. Bloodshot veins, infected clouding, cracked whites and web-like fractures read as "something is wrong with this person" long before anyone works out what they are looking at.

Why they photograph so well. The effect is built from fine line detail rather than flat colour, so it survives close-up shots and flash — which is exactly where a plain coloured lens tends to look flat. Pair with pale base makeup and the eyes do most of the work.

Three ways to build a dead eye. Milky whiteout — solid or blocked white that erases the iris completely, the classic reanimated-corpse look. Bloodshot and infected — red veining and biohazard prints that read as contagion rather than injury. Mesh — a fine net in white, sickly green or yellow that clouds the whole eye and photographs like cataract. Mix them across two eyes if you want the asymmetry that real decay has.

On dark brown eyes. These use opaque prints, so the veining and clouding sit on top of your natural colour. Brown eyes actually hold the detail well because the dark base makes the red and white linework pop.
