Most men's Halloween faces fail in the same place, and it is not the makeup. You can grey out the skin, crack black veins down a cheek and black out the mouth, and then someone stands close enough to talk to you and two perfectly ordinary brown eyes look back at them - and the whole thing collapses back into paint on a face. This clip is a guy in a plain white tee who fixes that part first: the lens goes in before a single brush is picked up, and everything after it is built to match a pair of eyes that already look dead.

What the lens does for this look

White Mesh is not a solid white lens, and that distinction is the entire look. Sitting on his fingertip in the opening frames it looks like a tiny woven disc - you can see the weave. A flat white lens reads like paper taped over an iris; the mesh keeps a faint grid and a little depth, so the finished eye reads as an eye that has gone wrong rather than a prop. It covers the pupil as well as the iris, which is why the stare in the later frames has no centre to aim at. Practically it behaves like the costume lens it is: the weave sits over your pupil, so everything you look at is dimmed and softened. Put them in somewhere well lit and with clean hands, keep them for the party rather than the drive there, and never wear a pair that has been on someone else's eye.

Meet “The Hairline Crack”

Three things carry this face, and only one of them is a colour. The skin is taken down to a flat grey-white and powdered matte so it reads as drained rather than painted. Black is packed into the whole socket and then dragged downward in short broken streaks under the lower lashes, which turns each eye into a hole instead of an eye. Then the cracks - fine black veins that begin at the outer corner and branch down one cheek, getting thinner and sparser as they travel, with a torn line at the mouth corner that still has a little red left in it. Black lips close the face off.

What is missing matters as much. No wig, no contour, no prosthetic. The hair is his own, pushed forward and left messy, and the clothes are a plain black hoodie. Everything expensive-looking about the result comes from the two lenses and a thin brush.

How to recreate it

Lenses in first, clean hands, good light - the rest of the face is judged against how dead the eyes already look
Skin: a grey-toned pale base or white cream paint sheered out with your fingers and powdered flat; leave the ears and neck slightly warmer than the face so it reads drained rather than masked
Sockets: pack matte black into the whole hollow of the eye, then pull it down under the lower lashes in short vertical streaks instead of a clean line
Cracks: with a thin brush and black gel liner, draw one main vein from the outer corner down the cheek, then split it into two or three finer branches and let them stop before the jaw
Mouth: black on the lips blotted matte, then a torn line dragged sideways from one corner with a dot of dark red left in the middle of it
