Retro Korean Idol Smoky Eye for Men: Pale Base, Black Socket, Black Contacts

The retro Korean idol face - pale skin, black-rimmed eyes, mouth slightly open - is the one look most men are curious about and most men get wrong, because they treat it as eyeliner. It is not eyeliner. It is a socket: black shadow pressed into the whole hollow above and below the eye until the eye looks sunk into shadow, and then a black lens that makes the pupil and iris read as one dark pool. What the lens does for this look

Big Eyes Black is a plain opaque black with a slightly larger diameter, and on a dark brown iris it does one thing: it deletes the boundary between pupil and iris, so the eye becomes a single black shape. That is exactly what the smoky socket needs - with a brown iris the smoke reads as tired; with a black one it reads as intentional, graphic, idol. Because the lens is matte and flat, the only highlight left in the eye is the catchlight, which is why the stare looks so direct in the finished frames.

Meet “The Ink Socket”

Three moves, and none of them is a wing. The whole face is brought a shade paler and fully matte so the eyes can be the only dark area. Black shadow is pressed - not swept - into the socket, above the lid and under the lower lashes, then diffused outward so there is no edge anywhere. Brows are brushed up and darkened straight, hair pushed forward wet and messy, a plain black tee, and the mouth kept soft and slightly open. The black lens finishes it by removing the last bit of brown from the face.

How to recreate it

1. Base: a matte foundation one shade paler than your skin, powdered so nothing shines - this look dies on glowy skin
2. Socket: with a small dense brush press black or near-black shadow into the crease and the hollow under the lower lashes, working in patting motions
3. Diffuse: with a clean fluffy brush soften every edge outward until the black fades into grey with no visible line
4. Brows: brush up and fill straight and dark; no arch
5. Hair pushed forward, damp and messy; plain black tee; keep the lips bare or a touch of matte nude
6. Black lenses in last, with clean hands - the eye should read as one dark shape with a single catchlight
