The Candy Clown: a Halloween Look That Starts From a Bare Face

Clown makeup is the Halloween look everyone thinks they can do in twenty minutes and then abandons halfway, because the face underneath keeps showing through and the whole thing reads as a costume laid on top of a person. This clip starts from an actual bare face - pink hair, no base, nothing - so you can see exactly which moves turn it into a character. What the lens does for this look

Every other element here is flat pigment - matte purple, matte red, a drawn-on nose. The lens is the one thing with depth: a multi-band print that reads yellow-green straight on and slides toward blue and violet as the eye turns, so the clown's stare changes colour between frames. On a dark iris the outer bands stay saturated because the print is dense, and the pale inner ring keeps the pupil area bright instead of letting it sink into brown. That shimmer against all the matte paint is what makes the face look alive rather than masked.

The face is built in three layers on a pale base: a purple wedge of shadow swept up past the temple on each eye with a fine black line drawn through the crease like a stitched brow, thin red tear drips falling from the lower lash line, and a small red heart on the nose. The mouth is a dark oxblood, slightly overdrawn at the corners. Everything sits in a pink-purple-red family that matches the hair, so the only thing outside that palette is the rainbow in the eyes - which is exactly why the eyes are where you look first. A black lace choker and a tiny top hat finish it without adding any new colour.

How to recreate it

1. Prime and pale the whole face one shade lighter than your skin; a clown reads from the contrast between skin and paint
2. Purple cream shadow in a wedge from the inner corner up past the brow tail; blend the outer edge, keep the top edge sharp
3. Draw a thin black line through the crease and extend it to the temple - it stands in for the brow
4. Red liquid liner for two or three tear drips from the lower lashes; vary the lengths
5. A small red heart on the tip of the nose, then oxblood lipstick overdrawn slightly at the corners
6. Rainbow lenses last, after the paint is set - handle them with clean fingers and go straight to camera
